What advice would you give someone starting their career in the legal field?
- Starting as a paralegal requires strong research, writing, and organizational skills. Mastering legal terminology, case management software, and research tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis will set a solid foundation. Attention to detail is crucial, as even small errors in legal documents can have significant consequences. Communication is also key—you’ll interact with attorneys, clients, and court personnel, so professionalism and clarity are essential. Being proactive by asking questions and taking initiative will help you learn quickly and stand out. Staying updated on legal trends, joining professional associations, and improving your technical skills, such as proficiency in Microsoft Office and e-filing systems, will enhance your efficiency. Additionally, remember that the legal world is small—your reputation follows you, so always conduct yourself with integrity, reliability, and professionalism. With diligence, adaptability, and a commitment to learning, you’ll establish yourself as a valuable asset in the legal field.
If you weren’t in the legal profession, what would you be doing?
- If I weren’t a paralegal, I would have opened a food truck, driven by my deep love for cooking—a passion that comes from my grandma. She had a way of bringing people together through food, always making sure everyone was well-fed and taken care of. Her kitchen was filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals. Watching her cook, I learned that food isn’t just about sustenance; it’s about connection, love, and creating memories. That same joy of feeding people has stayed with me, and while my path led me to the legal field, my love for cooking will always be a part of who I am.
